This is not a game - this is the raw stuff out of which great games can potentially be made, assuming one has the patience to do so. Game modes like Prop Hunt or Trouble in Terrorist Town are both games that spun off of this mod, showing the potential it has when dedicated developers get ahold of the framework. What makes Garry's Mod work is what other people have done with it. The game is one hundred percent what you choose to make of it, and at a fundamental level, there's not much to recommend it over any other game on Steam. There are no built-in objectives here, no story and no real characters. It's more of a sandbox than anything else, an empty world that allows you to spawn and manipulate objects to your heart's content. An open-world sandboxĬalling Garry's Mod a game never feels quite right. If you've never played it before, you owe it to yourself to sit down and take a look at exactly what makes it tick. Garry's Mod seems like it'd be just another flash-in-the-pan mod, but it's had a level of staying power that's honestly hard to believe.
While there are plenty of games out there that make themselves open to the mod scene, one of the most popular games on Steam is one that's made for nothing but mods.
It's tough to overestimate just how creative gamers can be when they're given the tools they need to succeed.
